Jack Leo Burdette Jr., 56, of Woodbridge, was killed early Friday, March 7, after rushing into traffic to rescue a loose dog on Dumfries Road near Old Stage Road in Dumfries, according to the Prince William County Police Department.

Burdette, a father of three and a "lifelong protector of animals and those he loved," saw the 2-year-old Dalmatian/Pointer mix running loose amid early morning traffic and acted without hesitation.

He successfully caught the dog and began walking back across the road when he was struck by a 2022 Ram ProMaster van approaching the intersection, officials said.

An officer and a Good Samaritan performed first aid at the scene, but Burdette was rushed to a hospital, where he died from his injuries.

The dog survived and was treated before being returned to its owner.

"Jack's death impacts so many of us," wrote a family member on a GoFundMe campaign set up to cover funeral expenses. "A lifelong protector of animals and those he loved, this morning Jack ran into a street to catch and save a dog from being hit by a car during early morning rush hour.

"While the dog was able to escape unharmed, Jack was not."

Tributes have been pouring in for Burdette, described by friends and family as selfless and kind.

"We have lost an advocate that saved a life, and lost his," one friend wrote in a tribute. "It’s heartbreaking."

"This is so sad and a true risk for animal rescuers," another advocate posted on social media. "Shame (on) the drivers who show no compassion for animals and people trying to save them.

"People often speed up and drive more recklessly to express distaste for rescue efforts and disregard for human and animals lives."

Another well-wisher added, "Just a horrible tragedy, and the only solace is knowing he went out doing something completely selfless.

"My condolences to his family and friends.

"And my condolences to the driver and dog owner, too; this will weigh very very heavily on them, and I hope they also can find peace."

The driver of the van, a 45-year-old Woodbridge man, remained at the scene and has not been charged. Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash to contact investigators.

Burdette's family is now focused on honoring his memory and ensuring his legacy as an animal lover and protector lives on.

"We are raising money for funeral costs to celebrate his life, and appreciate any amount you can donate."
